POOR MANAGEMENT OF INFORMATION GIVEN ABOUT THE CUSTOMER SERVICE COURSE LED TO AN EXACERBATION OF MY SON’S EHLERS DANLOS SYNDROME SYMPTOMS.
My son has just returned home, cold, fatigued and in pain, after walking around Barnstaple for an hour and a half in a 2oC temperature. No, he isn’t an exercise enthusiast and he isn’t keeping up with New Year’s resolutions. He was trying to find the venue for the ‘Customer Service Course’ run by Working Links, a company working alongside Job Seekers.
Sometime around November my son was told he was being placed on this course. He was informed that he wouldn’t be given the address yet incase the venue changed. However, he was never given the full address. He was given vague details of the course being held at the Baptist Church, near the Green Lanes car park in Barnstaple. No postcode was given. The problem is there is more than one Baptist Church in Barnstaple. He was asked if he knew where the location was, which he said yes, as he assumed it was the church closest
He walked around Barnstaple, using Google Maps on his phone to find the church. The church closest to the Green Lanes car park was locked. Another thing also happened, which sometimes happens with Google Maps, one of the destinations on the map didn’t actually exist. Then due to the very low temperature the battery on the phone froze, ending the ability to search.
My son, along with myself and my daughter, are challenged with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. This is a connective tissue disorder caused by a lack of collagen. Collagen is present in joints, blood vessels, the digestive system, the eyes. Basically you can see it as the glue that holds the body together. A person with EDS become fatigued quickly as their body has to work a lot harder to function compared to a person without the condition. People with EDS also experience exacerbation of symptoms in extreme temperatures. So walking around for that amount of time in a temperature close to freezing caused hip pain. The length of time spent walking flared up IBS symptoms.
On returning home my son tried phoning his advisor from Working Links a couple of times. However, her phone was switched off both times.
The rest of the day my son has spent discussing where the venue may be, with another person who was also unable to find the church.
